The Vienna Concert Guitar is the only one of its kind. This hand-made instrument was specially constructed with an arched back put together from several pieces of wood. Its balanced, homogeneous sound allows it to stand its ground as a solo instrument as well as in accompaniment. Due to its polyphonic nature, the concert guitar presented a special challenge. Specifically, chords only sounded authentic when the chords themselves were sampled! After a three year production cycle for the orchestral sample libraries, the Vienna Symphonic Library team felt ready to take up this challenge, capturing all of the concert guitar’s versatility and its many playing techniques. The samples were “tamed” and made reproducible with the help of the Vienna Symphonic Librarys unique Performance Tool. The Vienna Concert Guitar became a reality through a combination of individual prerequisites: The project’s godfather, Thomas Meitz, in the framework of his concert guitar diploma, spent 1 1/2 years on developing the Library’s structure. Due to his practical background as a recording engineer and chief editing engineer of the Vienna Symphonic Library, he was able to realize his concept optimally and without compromise.

Ni’ groundbreaking Sample Engine with Layer Morphing Technology allow the shaping of the piano to suit your own needs with high-end effects and control possibilities for the smallest tonal nuances. Overwhelming power, a ‘singing’ sound and a resonance that never quite ends are all characteristics of VIENNA CONCERT GRAND. These sound qualities stem from the unique design of the original. Different strengths of the soundboard in the different layers of bass to treble ensure optimum transfer of string vibrations and allow full power and the finest nuances in all registers – from thundering piano concertos to the softest whisper.

25 tuned plastic mouth-horns, or ‘Kazoos’. Recorded in stereo with 5 round robins per note, the Kontakt instrument doesn’t sound as silly as the name might suggest. Roll off the attack, lower the filter cutoff and you’ve got an atmospheric horn-pad synth instrument. Our custom KSP interface adds controls to increase the number of kazoos in the ‘section’, with options for adding pitch instability and variable note-off levels.

The Zither is a stringed instrument, having many strings stretched across a thin, wooden sound box. It is played by strumming or plucking the strings, either with fingers or with a plec. The Zither is most commonly found in Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, northwestern Croatia and the southern regions of Germany. The instrument became famous by its charismatic main theme “The 3rd man” of 1949 film noir played by Anton Karas. The Zither instrument we are presenting is a Concert Zither. The strings are arranged as follows: 5 fretted melody strings, placed above a guitar-like fretboard, then 14 unfretted “accompaniment” strings; followed by 11 unfretted “bass” strings and finally 6 “contrabass” strings. The concert Zither has a rough and raunchy sound often descibed as “mellow”.
