There’s nothing quite like the sound of a vintage 1959 Hammond B3 running through an old Leslie cabinet. And when you sit one of the modern masters of the instrument at the keyboard, that’s when the magic really starts to happen. Recorded at the acclaimed Lucy’s Meat Market Studio in Los Angeles by engineer Pete Min, Larry Goldings Vintage Keys Volume One covers a massive range of soul, funk, blues, jazz and r&b keyboard grooves not only on the Hammond B3, but also on a vintage Wurltizer Electric Piano. Utilizing a combination of classic microphones like Neumann U87s, RCA 44s and Cole room mics, the sound of both the Hammond and the Wurlitzer were captured in pristine and incredibly warm detail. From the percussive taps of Larry’s fingers on the keyboard, to the pumping bass of the Leslie, every nuance of the performance and the instruments are extremely “present” in the mix.
Larry Goldings is a two-time Grammy-nominated pianist, keyboardist, composer, and songwriter. Among jazz enthusiasts, Goldings’ organ trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart has been recognized for charting new ground, with synergistic playing and hard-swinging yet thoughtful music. Goldings’ talents have been sought-after by an impressive range of musicians including James Taylor, Norah Jones, John Mayer, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Tracy Chapman, Rickie Lee Jones, Charlie Haden, Steve Gadd, Herbie Hancock, Sia, Christina Aguilera, Elton John, and Leon Russell.
