George Yohng (aka 4Front Technologies) has released an updated beta version (v2.0) of his great freeware W1 Limiter effect for Windows and Mac.
W1 Limiter is a “brickwall limiter” that is a clone of Waves L1-Ultramaximizer, with “identical output” and an approximation of Waves L2.
W1 Limiter 2.0 is available for free download via 4Front Technologies (2.8MB download size, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU plugin format for Windows & Mac).
The original version of this effect was released a long time ago, and it was an emulation of the L1 Ultramaximizer by Waves. The new version introduces adaptive release time, in order to emulate the behavior of the L2 Ultramaximizer by Waves.
According to the developer, it was not possible to completely replicate the behavior of the L2 Ultramaximizer. The algorithm implemented in W1 Limiter 2.0 is an approximation of the original effect.
W1 Limiter used to be my go-to limiter for several years. It is a fantastic plugin and I definitely recommend it as an addition to your limiter collection. I currently use Limiter №6 for mastering and LoudMax for tracking, but I’ll give the new version of W1 Limiter another go.
